In the Mix: DJ Choudoii’s “Summer Jam ’15”

With more of a hip-hop flavour than most Memories of Shibuya mixes, DJ Choudoii (which he translates as “DJ just the right”) brings a smooth mix of rap and Shibuya-kei on “Summer Jam ’15”, with Asako Toki, Scha Dara Parr (whose “Summer Jam ’95” gave the mix its title), HALCALI and Kahimi Karie all making appearances. The considerable overlap between the laid-back styles of ’90s J-urban – influenced far more by the likes of early De La Soul than by the more confrontational hip-hop that was more popular in the West – and Shibuya-kei makes perfect fodder for a mix, and Choudoii’s selection should be more than enough to appeal to fans of both genres.

There could hardly be a better soundtrack to lazy summer days, and those interested in hearing more from the talented Choudoii can check out his personal and Choudoii Records Mixcloud pages – naturally, he’s on Twitter, too.

EYESCREAM.JP presents a mix from Scha Dara Parr’s DJ SHINCO

Following up on the release of his group’s 1212 LP, DJ SHINCO of Scha Dara Parr collaborated with ultra-hip fashion/lifestyle magazine EYESCREAM to bring a hip-hop mix heavy on the laid-back sounds that so heavily inspired the famous group over the years. Being a proper Shibuya-kei DJ, of course, SHINCO hops around genres playfully, never sticking with any one for too long – his eclectic mix mostly focuses on old-school hip-hop, but vintage Argentinian dance music, disco, funk, and “Frontin'” by Pharrell Williams  (that song is its own genre) make appearances as well. Check it out!

First video from Scha Dara Parr’s 1212 released!

Scha Dara Parr’s first album came out in 1990, the same year that Maki Nomiya joined Pizzicato Five, Flipper’s Guitar released Camera Talk, Kahimi Karie and Takako Minekawa made their inauspicious debut as Fancy Face Groovy Name, and by all means the brief, beautiful Shibuya-kei boom had begun. 25 years later, and the musical climate could hardly be more different, but ANI, BOSE and SHINCO remain unfazed – still making their decidedly old-school style of hip-hop as if nothing has changed in over two decades together as a band. “Chuuyou Heibon Punch,” the first video from 1212, features the middle-aged rappers (and DJ) hanging out around Tokyo’s Akabane area, appropriately enough for a song that will be used in a TV Tokyo docu-drama set there. 1212 comes out January 28.

Scha Dara Parr announce first new album since 2009

Veteran Shibuya-kei hip-hop act Scha Dara Parr hasn’t exactly been away from the game – the years since their last proper album, 2009’s 11, have seen a few limited-release EPs and a small handful of collaborations – but nevertheless, it’s still been quite a while since ANI, BOSE and DJ SHINCO got together and released a full-length. Essential Japanese music resource Natalie.mu has the scoop on the new album, 1212, which will be their first collaboration with label SPACE SHOWER MUSIC – whose YouTube channel, it should be noted, has a pretty damn good pair of Shibuya-kei playlists. The album comes out January 28, and it will be commemorating an impressive 25 years since the group’s debut album Scha Dara Taisakusen‘s release.
